The Private Global Custodian Bank Rating is a client-specific business rating of a global custodian. It is commissioned by a custodian's client, rather than the custodian itself. The rating is not made public, but is kept confidential and restricted to the client and the custodian. The private rating evaluates a custodian's credentials, including the major categories of: status/experience, internal operations, and risk/representations, together with core services: settlement, safekeeping, income collection, corporate actions, corporate governance, cash/FX management, strategic cash management, taxation and securities lending.
Produced as a snapshot of a point in time, the rating is based on an evaluation of the custodian's responses to a detailed, structured questionnaire, together with feedback from the client on the custodian's actual service performance. The analysis of the custodian's responses will also, where approriate, be tailored to the individual client relationship.
The overall rating uses the familiar AAA to C ratings scale, (AAA: extremely strong, C: unable to deliver, etc), and is applied to each of the categories and underlying services evaluated. The ratings scale is benchmarked from Thomas Murray's extensive databases of custodian information, and our intimate knowledge of what constitutes best market practice.
In addition to the core services, additional services relevant to a client, such as investment accounting or performance measurement can be analysed and rated separately. This analysis produces a discrete individidual rating, not included in the overall rating categories outlined above.
